TRIP DESCRIPTION

On this tour you will discover the worlds driest desert with all its splendid beauty. You will see the most colorful sunsets from the valley ‘Valle de la Luna’ and from the salt lake ‘Salar de Atacama’.  After a day’s trek through desert lands and bizarre canyons you refresh and relax in the thermal springs of Puritama. The Tatio geysers’ roaring vapor-columns and gushing waters will give you a breathtaking performance of nature wonders. The oasis San Pedro de Atacama with its characteristic adobe-houses will host you and be the starting point for your daily tours.

DIFFICULTY

Day tours that will challenge you moderately. Differences in elevation but also in temperature will be the most challenging part. Higher elevations should not create problems for you.

ITINERARY

Day 1: San Pedro de Atacama – Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley)

After your arrival at the airport in Calama we will directly take you to San Pedro de Atacama (transfer without aguide). On an elevation of 2,400m, the little town that has never lost a certain hippie-flair welcomes you with a variety of restaurants and bars. From here, you will take short hikes into the bizarre desert world surrounding the town. Together, you will wait for the sun to set in Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley). The sunsets play of colors is absolutely breathtaking (excursion in international mixed group). You will stay overnight in a guesthouse with private bathroom. (-/-/-)

Day 2: Guatin-Canyon – Thermal Springs of Puritama

Today, your tour will lead you through the spectacularly rocky Guatin-Canyon (Quebrada de Guatin). Here you can marvel at the region’s typical flora. Although the Atacama desert is extremely droughty, it brings out all sorts of cactuses among which you will certainly find the eye-catching Cola de Zorro. After that you will take a replenishing bath in the hot thermal springs of Puritama. All excursions in international mixed groups. Second night in the guesthouse. (B/-/-)

Day 3: Lagunas Altiplanicas – Salt Lake Salar de Atacama

Today you will visit the wonderfully blue lagoons Miscanti and Miniques, born less than a million years ago by the eruption of the Meñiques Volcano. These lagoons are part of the Flamingo's National Reserve and were witnesses of the first human settlements of the zone: about 4,000 to 3,000 B.C. You will also visit the Chaxa Lagoon, an extraordinary pool of water in the middle of the salt desert, and observe the many different flamingo species that call this desert zon home. Lunch at the village Socaire or Toconao. Excursion in international mixed group. Back in San Pedro you spend your night in the same guesthouse. (B/D/-)

Day 4: Tatio Geysers – Settlement Atacameño Machuca – Laguna Cejar

After an early breakfast you will go visit the Tatio-Geysers at an elevation of 4,320m. The geysers roaring vapor-columns spread like ghostly wafts of mist over the thermal springs. On your way back you make a stop in the deserted settlement Atacameño Machuca. With a bit of luck you meet one of the few remaining locals who often offer empanadas or anticuchos de Llama. At about 1 pm you will reach San Pedro.

An excursion in the afternoon will lead you to the two colored Laguna Cejar with its white salty rims. Before you head back to San Pedro you will visit the Laguna Tebinquinche in the famous Salar de Atacama (salt lake). Meanwhile, the evening sun will have dipped the surrounding volcanoes into a bath of purple light.  All excursions in international mixed groups. Overnight stay in the same guesthouse. (B/-/-)
